The Big Busk for Stendhal was delighted this week to present a guitar – bought thanks to a generous donation from Limavady Lions Club – to one of their youngest members.
The Big Busk for Stendhal provides an opportunity for both amateur and experienced musicians of all ages and abilities to play in a band, or individually, and improve their musical skills.
The organisation encourages interest in and appreciation of music in weekly workshops, as well as organising public performances such as live music nights, busking, radio shows and playing at Stendhal Festival of Art.
The semi-acoustic guitar will be available to all members of the Big Busk for Stendhal to borrow and the first one to take advantage of the opportunity is 12-year-old Oisin McCann who will be learning to play the instrument in the coming months with help from the team at the Busk.
Peter Simmons, who runs the Big Busk for Stendhal, said: “All of the buskers were delighted with our first donated guitar from Limavady Lions. This guitar will be available for years to come for anyone who doesn’t have access to their own instrument – they can then come to our weekly workshops for free guitar tuition.
“This project contributes to health and well-being, promoting inclusion, developing skills, encouraging interaction with older and younger people and creating a sense of ownership and community. Membership of the Big Busk is free and anyone is welcome to come join our weekly workshops.
“We can’t thank Limavady Lions enough for this and with lots of busking gigs coming up in next few months it will be well used as we raise money for local charities and make people’s musical dreams become a reality.
“On behalf of everyone at The Big Busk for Stendhal I’d like to say a massive thank you to Limavady Lions for their support.”
A spokesperson for Limavady Lions said: “We try to give back to our own community and support youth where possible. We wish Oisin lots of success and fun with his guitar.”
John Cartwright one of the organisers of Stendhal Festival paid tribute to both the Lions Club and Big Busk leader Peter Simmons saying: “This is fantastic news for the Big Busk so a massive thank you to all at the Limavady Lions Club for getting involved and donating to the organisation. Their support will help continue to grow the Big Busk and give more opportunities to aspiring musicians in the Limavady area.
“I would also tip my hat to Peter Simmons who has been a real driving force behind maintaining and expanding the big busk in recent times. This group was set up in 2014 and to see it continue to flourish gives us at Stendhal great pride.
“Peter is doing a great service to our community and we look forward to seeing his continued hard graft pay off for many years to come.”
The Big Busk for Stendhal holds weekly rehearsals and workshops every Tuesday from 7pm – 9pm at the Alexander Arms in Limavady. Everyone welcome. For more information find The Big Busk for Stendhal on Facebook.
